Quote for page 25 of spet issue:
"Think that you can paint? Most of us can barely get two colors to match, but some of you can throw down a paint scheme that could be right at home on a church ceiling. So we want to see if you have got what it takes by entering our new monthly painting contest on our website. Check out the forums and hit up the painting section for guidelines and rules. The winner will be featured here [the mag] and win a free 6 month subscription of XRC!"

Hi All,
This is my first try at this sort of thing...hope it works! Mainly I hope you will enjoy my pix...τΏτ= Okay.. Project name: Super Cool Cruiser
Paints used: I've painted it using all Faskolor paints, flips, and glitters. I started off by coating the entire body with Bob Dively's liquid mask -4 coats with an airbrush- let it dry completely. -after washing it, of course!- I began by painting the butterflies, first with maple flip, jade flip, with a touch of sapphire flip added. Then I hand veined the wings using a bamboo skewer, and pearl black paint. I then used a shield to fade the candy purple, custom mixed lavender, then the light blue accents before backing it in white. I then began working on the tribal accents by first hand painting the yellow dots to add a bit of extra bling. I used maple flip near the points with sapphire flip in the remainder of the design followed by pearl black. I then back cut the entire design -one hour per butterfly!- for the 'neon' blue border stripe. I've used a light coat of fluorescent blue, backed with white. I then painted the body using one coat of transparent blue, backed with silver glitter/faskoat mix, backed with a blue glitter/faskoat mix. Plus the red glitter checkers on top using Parma's "Angularity" pattern. I backed this with another coat of transparent blue followed with pearl blue, pearl silver, then white. I coated it all with faskoat to make it easier to keep clean..and to help the paint job last longer on the track.
PT Cruiser Body by: HPI
Inspiration: My wife asked me to paint this for her Tamiya TT-01 Chassis. She found a sticker she liked a lot..and asked if I could try to paint a blue PT Cruiser in a similar style. She seemed pleased with it..and I think it looks great flying around the track! Well...what do you think of it?...τΏτ= I look forward to hearing your comments..and possibly learning from them.
Thanks!

looks great! im going to throw a couple things on the table for your next body. 1) you only notice it if your really looking for it but its making the lines more fluid. they kinda look choppy when you come to a corner. im talking specificaly about the pinstripe "neon" tribal stuff you did. dont get me wrong, it looks really good. 2) again, im looking at the tribal thingy, and looking very closely. next time, try to make the lines alittle more even. one thing you can try is taking a (for example) popcicle stick and taping 2 #11 blades to the side to it. then you only do 1 pass but making 2 even cuts. understand?
the body looks great for sure!

Thank You!! Yes..It was quite difficult cutting that out, as I did.. I had not seen the article on the 'slick stick trick' yet...τΏτ= I have now..and my pin stripes have improved quite a bit! I'll try to snap a few pix soon. Thanks again for the tip..that one really works! If you happen to have an extra X-Acto handle..and a band saw -or similar- you may also cut the slot in the blade holder a bit wider to accept two blades...which makes a very thin pin stripe cutting tool. Try it..you'll like it...τΏτ=
Thanks again,

i have actually done that tip you mentioned before, ripped alittle paper and put it between the blades though. made it alittle wider. very good tip though. one thing to keep in mind though, if you have a stripe over a centimeter dont use this trick. the curves on the body will make the blade un balanced and you will end up with one line in a few areas.

08-10-2005, 07:53 AM
That's a great idea! I hadn't thought of the paper shim...τΏτ= Yes...I've noticed when going around complex curves -such as near some headlight buckets, etc-...the blades do tend to wander apart. I wonder if putting a shim between the blades -leaving only the cutting points showing- would help? Other than that..cutting straight stripes has never been so easy...or less intimidating! Thanks to that great paint article with the 'slick stick trick'!
Have any of Y'all tried using Rit dye on your wheels? or painting them yet? I've tried both...and really love using the Rit dye trick! Especially on some chrome wheels. Painting the wheels is easier if liquid mask is used I think... It also helps to finish the paint with a coat or two of "Faskoat" or Pactra's version of the same thing...I forget the name of it now... Just the same... Thanks a lot for your comments, and very helpful tips!

i havent tried dyeing my rims yet. only thing ive done is taken some of the monocoat they use for airplaned and cut out a bunch of 50mm circles to place on the outside of my rims. my foam tires are yellow and theres no yellow whatsoever in my bodies so i had to do white. looks ok on the track. i might have to give the rit-dye a try though. do you know if it harms foams?

I've never thought of using plane covering on wheels....Hmmmm...τΏτ= Interesting! Might be a great way to add bling those very boring disc wheels that come with the TC-4 kits these days.
You've asked if I've tried to dye foams... Yes, I have. CRC foams -the bright yellow kind- All I got was nasty...I don't think they are made of nylon? Just the same..the dye was not a good thing, cosmetically speaking. It didn't seem to hurt them though...it was a pain to dye them due to their wish to float... I know most Pro Line, and RPM, wheels are made of nylon and take dye fairly well. Some times it takes less than a minute to get the color you're looking for..other times, it can take as long as a half hour, or longer, for the lighter colors to 'get right'. I'll attach a couple of pix of Pro Line chrome, and white wheels using different colors of Rit dye. Give it a try...you just might like it!

I got the idea for this Tiki theme while walking through a gift/novelty shop at the mall, they were pushing tiki themed items (bamboo curtains, mugs, towels, that kind of stuff). The body is a McAllister Racing 1/18th scale late model which sits on one of my 18Ts. The only stckers are the XTreme RC stickers on the rear spoiler, everything else is paint. The body is painted entirely with Parma FasKolors.
Hope you like it.

All I can say is WOW!!!
These are some great paint jobs. I am still working on a design for my Jammin, but hope to get it in next months contest.
I like them all..
I almost think we should have catagories. Best free hand artwork. Best line masking, etc. I know we kinda can't do that since we can have only one winner, but the entries by RCpaint, Majestic RC, TwiztID, nitroacerx7, and nitro flash are all good. I hope I can get to that level some day.
as an exampble of what I mean by catagories, Nitro Flash did an awsome tape job. The design doesn't look overly complex or loud. the color combinations rock!!! It is a clean well done body.
On the other hand nitroracerx7, TWIZTID, and Majestic did some outragious graphics. Majestic gets a two thumbs up for diong a great flame and trible paint sceme together on one car. The shading is outragious.
TWIZTID has some awsome shading for his skull. You gotta love sculls. :D
I am not sure if the butterfly done by nitro was free hand but he also did a good job with pin striping the trible designs.
RC PAINTS did some cool tiki graphics. considering this is a 1/18 car, that makes it even harder since it is so small.
Man you all do some great work it just stinks there can only be one winner.
Since I am not competition this month, good luck to you all, and keep those bodies coming in. It is great to see that not everyone does a one color rattle can job. :D

Thanks for the nice compliments, I'm flattered! You're correct..it isn't being the judge here..too many really great artists/entries. You've asked about if my paint work was freehand. I actually did the butterflies using liquid mask and a hand held shield -made from the little plastic dividers that come with a "Plano" fishing box.- I 'bounced' the paint off the shield into the spaces I wanted it to go. The pin stripes were all cut by hand...as I had not seen the cool tip on the double cut X-Acto blade using the stick/tape handle yet...τΏτ=
