Quote from Derek:
September competition:
Since you guys are putting the time and effort in, I'm going to try and make this happen this month. In our next issue (December 2005) I'm going to make the Custom Works Colum feature the bodies in these paint contest. I might not be able to feature them all, but I want to try and get them in there as inspriration.

Now I can't promise this as 100% yet, because I do have a planned article, but I think it would be cool to show our readers of the print magazine your hard work on line."RC411 Paint Competition!"
Quote for page 25 of spet issue:
"Think that you can paint? Most of us can barely get two colors to match, but some of you can throw down a paint scheme that could be right at home on a church ceiling. So we want to see if you have got what it takes by entering our new monthly painting contest on our website. Check out the forums and hit up the painting section for guidelines and rules. The winner will be featured here [the mag] and win a free 6 month subscription of XRC!"
Quote from Derek:
"Don't forget that you guys still need to send the pictures in to our Racer Ride section. You can win a year subscription and some other junk like a Tee Shirt and XXX Main Video if you're pick the winner of the month."

"Send all Racers' Rides pics to derekb@rc411.com. Put "Racers' Rides" in the subject line."

Sorry about this, but the winner of last months comp is not in the november issue, because Derek was out of the country and could not get it in the magizine.

Winners:
June/July Best Paint:
RCpaint or Keith Harris from Scotia, NY!!!!!!

Wow! I agree...your shading, choice of colors, and design are killer! I don't think I can match it either...τΏτ- I'll submit my nitro car just the same...hope you will like it!
I call it my "Tuscan Star"
I've painted it using most all Faskolor paints and flips. This is one of my first tries at a paint job with very much detail, using masking tape only -other than the vinyl window masks HPI includes with their bodies-.
I first painted the headlight buckets with pearl silver then for the body color, I began with a coat of transparent blue followed by a coat of scrabbeus flip, with a pearl black back coat. The flames on the doors were done in maple flip -before the body coats were applied- I've painted the 'star' detail on the hood in various stages of the paint job, starting with the highlights and my custom mixed "Very Radical Red". (lol!) I make that using most anything I have that is red...till I get to the "Guards Red" end of red..then I add copious amounts of faschange blue, with a touch of faschange purple for good measure. The stripes were also done in this color. It's kind of difficult to actually tell what color they are when looking directly at them..they seem pinkish....fading into a scarlet red. That color took a while to come up with! I've tried to accent this with maple flip, blue stripes and yellow shading or 'glow' near the center of the star. I hope you will find it as eye catching as I do...τΏτ=
The body is an HPI, TVR Tuscan
-Mounted on my Associated, NTC-3-
My inspiration came from an issue of "Guitar World's Bass Guitar" my son had in our 'library', featuring Geezer Butler.... I took a peek and really liked the design on the opposing page. I scanned it, and worked the design into what you see on my hood....-several practice two liter coke bottles later!- I had a go with the design on my car body with a few flip flames, and a stripe or three for good measure...τΏτ= I've learned a lot on this project...I hope to learn more from your helpful comments.
Thanks,
Nitroracerx7

LOL actually I was thinking of doing something with an XBOX theme.
Is it ok to incorporate grahics using the pictures, or do we want it all paint?
I am kinda a Halo2 freek so for me I thnk it is a no brainer..
I was also thinking maybe a Giger / Aliens theme. You can mask the whole deal and do it in only a couple of colors.. hmmmm....

LOL You should post it...
Yeah my problem is that buggys have lots of tight corners and such with little to no flat areas t go hog wild.. I am playing with some ideas, but want it to really stand out.

So far I have found a nice image of master Chief I want to use, along with the Halo 2 Logo.
I know the main body will be black to blend in the Master Cheif. The trible flames I want to use will have green, but I am not sure how I should do the transision. The nose of the buggy could be green to white, or I could go white to green.. LOL I am getting a headache now.. :D
Master Chief will go on the front window, and roof of the buggy with the flames underneith him. only reason I am going with green it because the wing and tires are green so it kinda flows.
Still working it in my head then I need to deconstruct it for paint.

This month I painted a Pro-Line Early 50's Chevy Panel Van. The first thing that came to mind when looking at the body was that lovable character Rat Fink (the creation of the 60s air brush artist/custom car builder Big Daddy Ed Roth). The first model I ever built as a kid was of Rat Fink.
This body is painted with Parma, Pactra and Spaz Stiks paints. The masking was a combination of masking tape and hand cut vinyl mask.

This is the result of 17 hours of masking and painting, I used a combination of 1/4" vinyl tape, vinyl mask and masking tape to come up with a copy of Tom Meents latest monster truck "Maximum Destruction" The body is a Parma Team Meents body that I've had sitting in the basement for over a year waiting to get painted (This competition is what got me out of the easy chair and painting again).

This body is painted entirely with Parma FasKolor paints.
So what do you think?

rcpaint

Dislver668, if your talking about all of the pipes on the body, its just 1/4" vinyl tape put down in overlapping layers. You peel a piece of tape, use a fine brush to paint the lines, shade with black, fill in with silver then peel another piece of tape and repeat the process. This is what I call a "never again body" meaning half way through, you tell yourselve "never again".

dsilver668
09-13-2005, 04:22 PM
LOL yeah now that I look at the over lap i can see what you mean. I have seen pipe work like this before but instead of doing the overlap it was side by side if that makes sence. Then you can shade the whole thing at once, back it with grey or silver and peal. :D
If you look up HR GIGER "Aliens Fame" most of his industrial serialism is like this. even his charicters can be done like this. Only issue is the masking is a pain. It will take hours and hours to mask, then only a few minutes to paint. Plusa having flat surfaces helps a lot. Not much on such a small surface like an RC car. If I can find some info on the masking I will post it. I know Rides on Discovery channel had a pint off where on guy did a giger like mural. It had so much friskit I didn't even know they made sheets that big. Then he just shot down his black and highlights and pealed it back!!! It was so cool.
Maybe that is what I will do on my next project.
Taping dosen't make the house all funky with fumes.

rcpaint
09-13-2005, 04:31 PM
I saw that episode on rides, another airbrush artist that does that type of painting is Craig Fraser of Kal Kustoms, He is master when it comes to skulls. He makes a series of freehand mask and instructional videos on how to use them.

You ask and you shall recieve:
1) sprayed 3 heavy coats of liquid mask.
2) drew the whole idea on the outside. i had free range on everything as long as it was a SB theme.
3)cut out all things that would be black. ex, the outline of bob, and the outline on the tie.
4)cut out the outline for the drips, then sprayed.
5)pealed off the mask for the drips, sprayed the dark blue shadow on them, then light blue, then white.
6) did spongebobs eyes.
7) masked off the circles that are moldy looking green.
8) sprayed the yellow. this was really tricky actually. it took me a while to mix a right color for it. i mixed flouyellow and flouorange but that just gave me a really light orange.... plan B. mixed flouyellow and silver. that gave me green... i just started mixing a bunch of things then tried mixing the 2 differnent mixs together and presto.... perfect color.
9) backed the yellow with white.... thick coat of white.
10) mixed flougreen and dark grey to make the moldy color and sprayed that.
11) sprayed tie and grill

and there you have it... not too hard, the cutting was the thing that was the most time consuming.

dsilver668
09-16-2005, 11:35 AM

Here's my HPI Pro4 drifter. It's got an HPI 350Z body that I painted with Pearl Purple backed by Metallic Blue, backed by black. The combination gives it a chameleon effect that flips from Purple to Blue depending on the angle.
