(Assidsquiviah (http://www.rc411.com/forum/member.php?u=27496), QuabturaTer (http://www.rc411.com/forum/member.php?u=27497), soodyCync (http://www.rc411.com/forum/member.php?u=27495), Vouyhrcj (http://www.rc411.com/forum/member.php?u=27494))
and more are not member here to talk about RC only judging by the name involved. I eliminated a couple today after checking them out and finding that they are posted on other websites doing the Jordan shoes and wow gold stuff. So I guess this problem is something that will take a little more time and effort.
So I guess what I am asking and I think that Derek also can add his 2 cents to the pond, but do you guys think that it would be jumping the gun if we are to asume that one a new member signs up with some oddball name that we just remove it. I am asking because what my thoughts are is if we can eliminate the member before they even post, perhaps this would deter them from continuing the spam if they cant even get past modifying their accounts.
So this is what I have so far of posts I had to clean up in the mod system so the post was'nt still visable. By the way, Collecting of IP addresses dont really work. Its a network DHCP which means that those (The Spammers) running on their network which can be as little as 10 computers can access the SPL/IP and change the IP address or actually get re assigned one that is not in use. So the point is as you can see below, It make no differance collecting the IP addresses as their is validity to it. So any thoughts?

Sunday was like spammer hell, everytime I checked the site there was a new spammer posting viagra, levitra and cialis. I banned this bonehead 5 different times!! One thing I did notice was they used the same e-mail address each time.
My thought, and yes I know it's a pain for people who want to be true members, but maybe it's time to set it up so that users have to be approved by a moderator.
Just a thought.

I look for the oddball ones, and if I deem it bad I usually have put down the banstick. We need a stronger way of blocking them out during the sign up process. Cathpas aren't working, so maybe if we had some sort of RC related question in the sign up portion it would slow down spammers.

It seems like they sign up and, modify their profile, and then leave for a few days and wait it out.

Yeah some of them do. I think it's time to take a tough stance on this. Roket's idea of a RC related question might slow them down, but I doubt it would stop them.
I don't know, I still think moderator approval is the best way to go. A new member may have to wait a couple hours for an approval, but overall it would make the forums much better for everyone.

I agree on the moderator approval, It would make this easier and less hassle. I have 2 on the list (AnryMorano & DimaMos)that I have not yet deleted, Even though the email used matches a query check. I cant be positive and dont want to delete the accont unless I am positive it is spam related. Which honestly I think it is.
By the way, What seems to work best for me is to go into the mod area, and when you see a name post it in the search, then copy the IP addy and paste it in the (Stop Forum Spam) website. if it comes up, BINGO! then put the name and info here like I did and move on. If nothing comes up, Just check the info they place in their Account like blogs, or links, stuff like that. if it looks to be spam (Tremadol, SEX, ect.) Then you know they are spamming, Final way of checking is look at their email addy and use that is the search at (Stop Forum Spam) website. Youll be suprised what you might find. The info for the Stop forum Spam website is in the start of this thread.

I strongly agree T36, if we could devise some type of system like this, there would be virtually no spam. I also think that fro now, that website will help much too. But a mod approval will make everything cleaner.(since we usually can tell spammers from members)

Well here is the problem right now.
When I first set this post up I had 10 to start, So I stayed on the website and kept refreshing the browser and everytime I deleted 4 or 5 after checking them I would get another 2 or so new bots. As you can see by the list its a bit lengthy now and I can keep going and going.I came online this morning and noticed 4 or 5 more new accounts. The problem is I simply cant do this all by myself.
I added the list to see what similarities there were in the new member list and come to realize that allot of it is from Switzerland using 2 of the same IP addresses and I can delete the spam member by name, but I cant delete them by IP address which would stop a big group of it.
But at this moment, It would only seem like a better thing to have either a Mod approval setup or change the mod abilities to delete by IP addresses. I would rather have the mod approval myself.
As for now, I am not going to continue everyday, day and night, going through until all is settled. At first I was hoping that the system would stop trying to create new accounts after it realized that everytime a new account was made it was being banned. That isnt the case and I simply dont have the means or time to stay on this at a constant rate.
With that in mind, I would have to say something needs to be done as even now I notice there has been 15+ new accounts made that are spam accounts.

Just spoke with Norm, I banned a couple of IPs, I don't want to do that because it will block real people, but he explained that 2 of them had lots of spam coming. I'm going to look into what options we have in reducing it, but for every fix there is a spam bot designed to get around it.

Just a suggestion: Is is possible to write a code such that when a new member creates a name with 4 or more consonants in a row are in the user nename, the account is immediately blocked? That Swiss bastard and many spammers like to do that so they will make jibberish names like RTRVGGHAR ot Vwvwvwvwvwjm123 etc.

Well, the plan is that XRC is going to update the site soon in the future, The site is opperating on an older version. The second thing that may happen depending on how bad it gets is either mod approval which is based on if it will go to us and or questions that are related for access.

Sounds fair enough. And actually, I'm glad you guys are taking such actions and are actively banning people like this. I have not posted in XRC since earlier last year, and as soon as I logged in, I found a PM from a mamber named "Jeannette", definitely with links to prohibited sites. I was going to report this user, but fortunately, when I clicked on that user acct info, you guys were on the ball nad had already banned her! (I doubt this user is really a girl, most likely some punk bastard who wants to sound like a girl to promote his prohibited porn site  )

you are gonna be hit by spam bots any time that you begin to grow as a forum, Do you use the Mod or Admin approve new member queues? this can help cut down on some of the spamming as the new members are not allow to post until they are approved by one or the other. as well by setting you mandatory posting limit up as you have done this will kill some as well, only draw back to upping your post limit before you can start a thread is it can deter new users that are coming in when they can not post up a new thread when they get registered.

Check this forum out at 4:00am MST sometime, that's what time I'm up most mornings, and that's when I've deleted most spam posts and banned the spammers. Also check out the "members birthdays" at that time of the morning, there are a ton of porn, wow gold and other junk websites on those profiles. I go through those too, and ban them, we don't need kids who come here seeing that junk.

I have clicked on every thing I could in the mod panel, and didn't find it. I also couldn't find anything on main forum searches. Although I do know that mods have limited powers (i.e. move post or threads, ban users, delete posts or threads, stick or unstick threads, lock or unlock threads, and I think add announcements). For the most part mods only have control over the threads and some basic things over other member like being able to ban them change their sig, or even there avatar.
Also on a side note, when I was able to be a super mod (when I had an issue with being a standard mod at first) I had access over more things, although at the time I never really had a need to use that power.

I'll adjust what is necessary. I think once I figure stuff out keeping too many people out of the control panel is a good idea, so I'll have in house people be more active. It's basically some neglect that let it go too far.
